The academic aspect of the NAHSS
by Sander Verhulst | Delegate NAHSS 2019, Chengdu
"The NAHSS goes on," that is what many said when my own participation in the NAHSS in 2019 began. I only truly realized afterward what that slogan would mean for myself and my study choices. At that time, I was completing my BSc International Land & Water Management, and the NAHSS seemed to me primarily as an incredibly interesting and diverse program to learn more about China. There is a clear academic aspect in the NAHSS program, which I will share more about below.
Firstly, the NAHSS consists of a diverse group of ambitious students from all over the Netherlands, bringing together various study backgrounds and perspectives during the intensive interaction you have with each other (which continues even after the NAHSS). In the spring, there is an extensive program that includes Chinese language and culture lessons, various China-related events (such as a 'China college tour') and working on a multidisciplinary consultancy project. For the latter, our group focused on analysing the recently released Netherlands-China policy document from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – the 'China strategy' – and its possible implications. Finally, we also spent over a month studying at a Chinese university, taking courses on Chinese language and politics.
Now, a year later, I see the NAHSS as a platform that connects students, universities, companies, and organizations enthusiastic about China, wanting to better understand this country and think constructively about China's (future) role and impact in the world. Thanks in part to the entire NAHSS experience, I became so interested in geopolitics and foreign policy that I am currently pursuing a master's degree in 'international relations.' Additionally, this fall, I became a member of the youth think tank at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – where we were present during the Closing Ceremony of the NAHSS 2019. In short, now I also say it myself: "the NAHSS goes on." A unique opportunity that is more than worth seizing!
